About

Carbon Wise is an ecological landscape design company based in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, in the traditional territory of the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg, and the area governed by Treaty 20 and the Williams Treaties. Carbon Wise is owned and operated by Hayley Goodchild (she/her), a settler from Toronto who now calls Peterborough home.

Carbon Wise solves the problems of your outdoor space in a creative and sustainable way. My ecologically-informed designs emphasize healthy soil, low carbon materials, and climate resilience, all while addressing your lifestyle, budget, and aesthetics.

I’m currently booking design clients for late 2023/early 2024. See below for more information about my services.

Specializations

Rain Gardens

Re-direct water from your roof or driveway to a beautiful garden that protects your local watershed and reduces flood risk in your neighbourhood.

Drought-tolerant Landscaping

Conserve water with landscaping that not only withstands, but also thrives, in the more frequent and intense droughts that are expected with climate change.

Low growing plants are forming a drought tolerant groundcover in the foreground of this small, sandy, drought-prone front yard in Toronto.
Edible Landscaping

Grow food for yourself and to share with others. Reduce your dependence on the carbon intensive global food system. I can help you get started.

Pollinator & Wildlife Gardens

Support pollinators and other wildlife while regenerating healthy, diverse native ecosystems. My designs emphasize native plants suitable to your site’s conditions.

Compost & Water Systems

Reduce waste and costly inputs for sustaining your garden, by harvesting rainwater and building healthy soil through composting.

Integrate functional paths, patios, and other hardscaping into your space, using salvaged and renewable materials as much as possible.
